Special Characteristics (SC)

Special characteristics here are the result of a multidisciplinary decision-making process. Taking into account the product and process development results, a decision is made on the identification of special characteristics.

Special characteristics are characteristics which require special care and are not controlled by other processes. (from VDA volume A process description covering Special Characteristics)

Product characteristic or manufacturing process parameter which can affect safety or compliance with regulations, fit, function, performance or subsequent processing of product. (from IATF 16949)



Special characteristics are a subset of all characteristics. Failure to conform or comply with them has effects/consequences. Special characteristics are categorized as follows:

SC S: Safety requirement/product safety/safety-relevant consequences [...]

SC A: Approval-relevant, legal and official requirements at the time the product is placed on the market […]

SC F: Functions and requirements [...]
